Acme Dry Type Distribution Transformers

When selecting an Acme Transformer, it is critical that you evaluate your decision from every aspect before selecting a unit.  Here are some important factors that will help when selecting the transformer that best suites your needs.

  • Capacity - The KVA rating of the transformer.

  • Voltage Rating - Primary and secondary voltage of the transformer.

  • Insulation System - The sum of the maximum ambient temperature, plus the average winding temperature rise, plus the differential between the average winding temperature rise and the highest temperature of the winding.

  • Core and Coils - Wound cores or stacked laminations (copper or aluminum conductors).

  • Winding Insulation System - Open-wound, vacuum pressure impregnation, vacuum pressure encapsulated, encapsulated, and cast coil.

Some of the larger common sizes of dry-type transformers that are available include 500 through 7,500 KVA.  These transformers are usually fed by medium-voltage power systems (12.47KV, 13.3KV, or 13.8KV and have secondary voltage rating of 480V, three-phase).

When manufacturing dry-type transformers, Acme has several different construction methods making installation in many different applications possible.  The installation of the windings below indicate the many different types that Acme has to offer.

Open Wound
The open wound
method is Acme's standard process, which follows a dip and bake construction technique.  The conductor coils are preheated and dipped in varnish at a higher temperature.  The coils are baked, which cures the varnish.

Vacuum Pressure
A varnish coating is applied in interchanging cycles of pressure and vacuum, using a polyester resin for the vacuum pressure.  The coils are then cured in an oven.  This process is better than standard methods, because it includes pressure in addition to vacuum, which allows better penetration of the varnish in the transformer coil resulting in the transformer having increased resistance to corona.

Vacuum Pressure Encapsulated
Vacuum pressure encapsulated transformers offer better protection from harsh and wet environments.  Because several dip processes are added to the construction process, this method is superior to the vacuum pressure technique.

Encapsulated
Encapsulated transformers are standard open-wound distribution transformers. They are encased in an electrical grade silica and epoxy and are totally enclosed in a heavy-duty style enclosure.

Cast Coil (Molded Epoxy Sealing)

By a special molding process, these coils are encapsulated in epoxy.  Resin is used to solidly cast the transformer coils under a vacuum in a mold.  This manufacturing technique locks the windings in a strong epoxy resin with high dielectric strength, which protects the transformers in severe operating environments.

It is important for you to understand where to use each winding insulation described above due to different environmental needs.  When considering overall cost of a project, your final selection can have a strong impact.  For example, a cast coil transformer can cost 50% more than a vacuum pressure transformer.

You should use a vacuum pressure type transformer when improved resistance to corona (electrical discharges caused by the field intensity exceeding the dielectric strength of the insulation) and increased mechanical strength of windings are required.

When using a transformer where additional coil strength and protection is needed (such as in unforgiving environments like chemical process plants, construction material factories, and outdoor installations), cast coil transformers should be used.  Additionally, cast coil transformers have improved abilities to withstand heavy electrical surges such as recurring, but short duration overloads experienced by transformers in the industrial field.

When the engineer has a choice between the vacuum pressure or the vacuum pressure encapsulated transformer, the cast coil transformer is typically accepted as the best transformer in harsh environments. There are some manufacturers that indicate that the cast resin in the cast coil transformer can be detrimental to the life of the transformer. The co-efficient of expansion of the epoxy is less than the copper windings. The cyclical expansion and contraction with the heating and cooling of the coils can eventually crack the resin. These manufacturers indicate that the epoxy encapsulation can better deal with this expansion and contraction, and, in turn, offer longer life.

When designing electrical distribution systems, the electrical design engineer must always evaluate cost implications and system reliability.  In order to make the proper transformer selection, you must be armed with the most accurate information.

For over eighty-five years, Acme has been manufacturing transformers for industrial, commercial and OEM application. Acme is an industrial leader offering superior service, quality products and technical service.

possibilities.

Non-Linear Load Isolation
Transformers are
available in sizes ranging from 30 through 225 KVA with copper windings and a variety of other design options and accessories. Acme harmonic mitigating transformers offer you reduced transformer heat, reduced voltage distortion due to third order harmonics and higher efficiency.

Panel-Tran Zone Power Centers
are a pre-wired combination
of a primary breaker disconnect, dry-type shielded transformer,
secondary breaker disconnect and a secondary power panel, all in one convenient package. By not having to assemble, mount and wire these components, you save money, space and time. All you have to do is add the breakers and you are ready to go.

Power Conditioning
Acme True-Power Products consist of specialty designed ferroresonant
transformers. Although ferroresonant transformers have been an economical solution to power problems for many years, it took the skills of Acme’s highly regarded engineering
staff to refine it to meet today’s exacting requirements.
