Buck-Boost Transformers are small single-phase isolation transformers that will reduce (Buck) or raise (Boost) line voltage when connected as an autotransformer. The most common application is boosting 208 to 230v. Additionally, Buck-Boost Transformers are very well suited to motor loads, boosting 240 to 277 for lighter loads and many applications where nominal voltage is above or below 120 volts. Their use should be considered where supply line voltage is found to be consistently above or below desired nominal values of load voltage. Two or three may be banked for three-phase application where the neutral is available from the input.  Buck-Boost Transformers offer an economical solution to the adjustment of line voltages that are slightly above or below normal.

When a Buck-Boost Transformer is connected as an autotransformer, only a portion of the load KVA is actually transformed. The majority of the load KVA is passed directly through to the source. For this reason, a Buck-Boost Transformer may be used to supply a much larger load KVA than is indicated on the nameplate.

With two-thirds of all electrical loads being A.C. motor loads, maintaining the proper voltage to that motor is very important. When the voltage is not maintained, motor winding current is increased causing reduced motor torque and escalating motor temperature.  This results in the rapid loss of insulation life expectancy. Buck-Boost Transformers are an economical way to correct this potentially very serious problem. Whenever a line voltage change in the 4-20% range is required, a Buck-Boost Transformer should be considered.

To select the proper transformer for Buck-Boost applications, determine:

  • Input Line Voltage - The voltage that you want to buck (decrease) or boost (increase). This can be found by measuring the supply line voltage with a voltmeter.

  • Load Voltage - The voltage at which your equipment is designed to operate. This is listed on the nameplate of the load equipment.

  • Load KVA or Load Amps - You do not need to know both. One or the other is sufficient for selection purposes. This information usually can be found on the nameplate of the equipment you want to operate.

  • Number of Phases - Single or three-phase line and load should match because a transformer is not capable of converting single-phase to three-phase. It is, however, a common application to make a single-phase transformer connection from a three-phase supply by use of one leg of the three-phase supply. This is particularly true in a Buck-Boost application because the supply must provide the load KVA, not just the nameplate rating of the Buck-Boost Transformer.

  • Frequency - The supply line frequency must be the same as the frequency of the equipment to be operated, either 50 or 60 cycles.

How to select an Acme Transformer

ACME TRANSFORMER TYPES

Dry-Type Distribution Transformers
Acme offers a wide selection of Dry-Type Transformers from single-phase to commercial grade three-phase and low-noise transformers.

Industrial Control Transformers
The Acme Industrial Control Transformers offer the most advanced and versatile design concepts available to the marketplace today. They are designed to meet Acme’s rigid standards for mechanical durability as well as surpass agency and industrial
electrical standards.

Low Voltage Lighting Transformers & Power Supplies
Acme’s Low Voltage Lighting products provide a safe, long lasting, highly reliable power source.  These products are a perfect selection for landscape applications as well as interior use.  Low voltage lighting is a creative medium with unlimited application
possibilities.

Non-Linear Load Isolation
Transformers are
available in sizes ranging from 30 through 225 KVA with copper windings and a variety of other design options and accessories. Acme harmonic mitigating transformers offer you reduced transformer heat, reduced voltage distortion due to third order harmonics and higher efficiency.

Panel-Tran Zone Power Centers
are a pre-wired combination
of a primary breaker disconnect, dry-type shielded transformer,
secondary breaker disconnect and a secondary power panel all in one convenient package. By not having to assemble, mount and wire these components, you save money, space and time. All you have to do is add the breakers, and you are ready to go.

Power Conditioning
Acme True-Power Products consist of specially designed ferroresonant
transformers. Although ferroresonant transformers have been an economical solution to power problems for many years, it took the skills of Acme’s highly regarded engineering
staff to refine it to meet today’s exacting requirements.
