Acme Appliance Transformers are autotransformers designed to change
voltages to the standard motor voltages for appliances, air
conditioners, and etc.
The autotransformer is the most economical for
appliance applications, since only the difference between input
voltage and output voltage is transformed. This provides a smaller
size, reduced weight and lower cost. All transformers are
constructed by a core amination process from annealed electrical
grade silicon steel, which improves efficiency by keeping heat losses
at a minimum. Acme Appliances Transformers coils are precision
machine wound and hard finished. This provides cooler operation and
protects the transformer from moisture and debris, thus providing a
longer life.
Acme
Transformers are used in electrical distribution systems where
low voltage occurs because of inadequate wiring capacity or when low
voltage is caused by distributing power over a long distance. The
appliance transformers are also used when line supply voltage is not
matching the appliance motor nameplate voltage. Standard voltages
and frequencies vary throughout the world; and since these
transformers are suitable for 50/60 Hz service, they are applicable
in export trade where it is necessary to change to a standard
voltage for appliances operation. Theses autotransformers only
adjust voltage, they can’t change the frequency of a supply
circuit. In most cases, 60 Hz equipment can be operated from a 50 Hz
supply if the voltage is reduced around 8-10%.
Application
- Air conditioners, television receivers, and home appliance.
- Hermetically sealed refrigeration motors.
- Individual machine lights, tool post grinders, fans, convenience outlets for portable lighting and equipment.
- Magnetic contractors, relays, AC motors and other equipment requiring large starting currents.
Selection Steps
- Determine the incoming line supply voltage and frequency (50 or 60 Hz).
- Locate the voltage rating and the amperes on the equipment, usually this is found on the nameplate or instruction sheet. Multiply the two to get VA requirement of the load. If the power requirements are listed only in watts, consider this the same as VA. If only wattage ratings are known, double this requirement to obtain VA ratings of transformers needed.
- Add the VA requirements of the equipment to find total load. (All components must be of same voltage rating).
- Add 10%, this will take care of high starting current and overloading that may occur in equipment to find VA size of transformers.
- Select the correct transformer from the charts on the following pages using combination of supply voltage (primary), voltage rating of equipment (secondary) load VA rating, and type of connections desired.
